Spinal cord injury (SCI)
A spinal cord injury occurs when damage to the spinal cord disrupts communication between the brain and the body. Depending on the location and severity of the injury, individuals may experience weakness or paralysis, changes in sensation, muscle spasms, impaired balance and coordination, reduced endurance, and difficulties with walking, transfers, or daily activities. Some people may also experience challenges related to bladder and bowel function, pain, or autonomic regulation. While the extent of recovery varies, rehabilitation can help individuals maximize their independence, mobility, and quality of life.
